For the love of bells

It takes a ringer to understand another ringer and the art of handbells. And that is why I think our alumni is so strong. It's because handbells is such a niche category of the performance arts it becomes very exasperating when you want to talk about it and no one has even heard of your instrument. Even so, it takes only a ringer to understand another ringer. And that's why there's this magical affinity and chemistry when two ringers meet.

It was a mind-blowing experience today, sitting from the audience's perspective and being the onlooker for a change. I was witnessing all the different handbell groups and their fruits of hard labour, many many months of it. I am very glad to see that the standard of handbells in Singapore has risen exponentially over the years. I've learnt that every group has something to teach you. I've seen that every group has developed its own style. I'm happy to see that each group is getting bigger and more groups are being set up, even in primary schools.

There shouldn't be competition and judging when it comes to the performing arts. Art is subjective by nature and no value can and should be placed on either the art form or the artist. Instead, performers in the same field should celebrate each others talents and work together to harness the true magic of it all. Judging should only come in when we look at skill, technique and the level of difficulty, and even so, this too is subjective and it takes a veteran in that field to be the best judge.

I don't think there should be much disappointment in them getting the silver. After all, that is a grading given by judges of high status in this sad little performing arts industry in Singapore, no doubt people of great talent, but still inherently not ringers. Is it a mere coincidence that the groups with gold all played a chinese song, when one of the judges was from the nanyang academy of fine arts? I'm not suggesting anything, but there's definitely much more to ringing than can be seen or heard from an audiences' perspective.

Ringing should be about loving what you do and wanting to spread the joy of handbells to your audience. I gathered from corinne that the handbell conductors and directors themselves are quite sick of all these central judging nonsense and we should all just pull of it and have combine concerts to spread the love.. But I guess we can just continue dreaming on because the the schools will never let that happen. After all, everything in Singapore is about FACE and schools are also judged anyway...

The Raffles ringers have been revolutionary and they don't need a central judging grading to prove it. We were the first group that went to SYF without scores, setting the prescedent of wearing chokers and gowns, starting the trend of actually moving to the music (such that most of this years' handbell groups had a marked increase of syncronized swaying), being the first to have a full-length concert at the Esplanade this year, and simply by just loving it.

It takes a ringer to understand :)

We could have talked all morning.

Shutter Bug Me

My love for photography has been rekindled all over again!
Photos can now be viewed here: http://flickr.com/photos/minglee

Do check this out too!

Breaking the Gigapixel Barrier:
This page contains one of the highest resolution, most detailed stiched digital images ever created. It is the view from Bryce Point in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. It consists of 196 separate photographs taken with a 6 megapixel digital camera, and then stitched together into one seamless composite. The final image is 40,784 x 26,800 pixels in size, and contains about 1.09 billion pixels...a little more than one gigapixel.

Very awesome landscape photography :)

On Body Language

I believe that there is some sort of relationship between the amount of power or prestige a person commands, and his range of vocabulary. The higher up the management ladder a person is, the better he is able to communicate in words. This can be seen by the comparatively less amount of gesticulation he uses to communicate his thought and messages.

It's just like how toddlers express themselves through body language much more than what their limited range of words can achieve. And as they grow older they gesture less and speak more sense. That is also why the more flamboyant or what you call animated individuals are considered more childish.

We do not lose some of our reflex actions as we grow older. Rather, they become more sophisticated and obscure it almost seems natural! Adults still instinctively bring their hands to their mouths when they blurt something out by accident. However, this is quickly transformed into a noserub or chinrub, oh how cunning!

It takes alot of conscious practise and awareness to actually master body language. That only means that people good at telling lies must have been doing exactly that their whole life :)

Just Quit It

Thankyou. For slapping me yet once again and waking me up.

To think that I was the sole Invest program ic last year.
When now there are two of them sharing the same workload...

And after restructuring there emerged many roles, roles that didn't exist and that I was covering. With this new structure, I would have effectively been the treasurer and sponsorship ic and creative directors all rolled into one. Now the work of three, or even four. Sometimes I really envy them.

And I shall not go into the other adhocs.

It's funny how people can get stressed over ONE programme booklet or ticket or tshirt or something. But why should I be surprised that they only know how tedious it is when they actually have to do it?

It's not like I was taught what to do or how to do what.
I've learnt, lost alot, and gained alot.

But I've had enough. Enough of all these thankless jobs. And just when I had my life back it all comes crashing down again.

I picked up another J M Coetzee from the library and am once again crazy over his writings. His books have so far been very jam-packed with meaning, with brief and numerous dabs of sex. Makes for good reading when you are pressed for time :)

Every major poet a cloud of minor poets, like gnats buzzing around a lion.

There are many youths out there who aspire to be teachers, because they have once been motivated and touched by a great teacher and want to pass on that noble flame. But I'm just the opposite - I've seen so many more crappy and teachers with a dismal ability to teach and if I can't be one that inspires I rather not be one at all. I'm sad to say I've just seen the most uninspiring teacher in my life. It's evident that some do it just for the sake of teaching, for the money, for the promotion, for whatever other reason, it's just another job anyway.

A silly thought came to me this morning. That if the our principal were to sit in some of our selected tutorials, and the literature teachers were to sit in our physics lectures, I really think our school might just close down.

With a radical turn of events..

I continue from where I left.

I've turned into a true blue blogger and will be permanently writing here to satisfy my nice little fellowship of readers.
imprezzions.com will disappear in a few months, while I'm converting the space there into a more professional online portfolio in view of the next big thing!

Yeah! That's the next big thing! Ming Lee International. I think I'm falling in love with my own corporate identity :) Finally, I've registered the business, with my namecards, letterheads and stickers all on their way. Domain registered, site design in progress. Check, Check, Check.

That's my life for now. Do update your bookmarks!
